10 years of great care for heart failure patients

At Bristol Community Health, we have a range of excellent services providing great patient care. Last year we celebrated the 10th anniversary of our Heart Failure Service.

On 4 September, to mark the occasion, our Heart Failure Service hosted afternoon tea at the Holiday Inn, Filton. The event brought together current and former patients of the service, as well as GPs and staff from across Bristol Community Health. During the afternoon, we heard about what the service means to different people, whilst also enjoying some tea and cake during a networking break.

Our Chief Executive, Julia Clarke, opened the event by highlighting how the service had much to celebrate; they reduced the need for patients to go to hospital, have expanded their geographical coverage over the years, and have introduced mobile technology to their workstreams.

Dr R Laurence, GP, said that he counts on the Heart Failure Service as “an opinion I can trust,”

During the afternoon we heard from doctors from across Bristol who have worked closely with the Heart Failure team. Dr R Laurence, GP, said that he counts on the Heart Failure Service as “an opinion I can trust,” whilst Dr P McQuoney said that the “continuity that patients get from the service is brilliant.”

Patients were also invited to the event, and we were lucky enough to hear four very different, but equally touching, stories. Mike Rogers described staff as “excellent, personal, and humorous which is very important at a time when you need them,” whilst another patient described how, after leaving hospital, he needed to gain confidence in his own future again, and the Heart Failure service helped him achieve this.

Former patient, Annette, said that after talking to others who have not had this sort of care she feels the Heart Failure Team should be used as a model for other health trusts.

This extraordinary feedback from our patients has been fantastic to hear and allows us to build on a very strong service and ensure that the next ten years are even more successful.
