Kay Baggley, our Parkinson’s Nurse Specialist, talks to us about support services for Bristol patients.
Parkinson’s is a progressive neurological condition. People with
Parkinson’s don’t have enough of a chemical called dopamine, which can cause movement to become slower. Most people diagnosed are aged 50 or over but younger people can get it too.
Kay said, “We are very lucky to have specialist neurologists,
physicians and physiotherapists in Bristol that provide great
treatment for people with Parkinson’s.
“Everyone’s experience of Parkinson’s is different, so our
service looks to provide information, advice and support based
on the individual needs of the patient. Medications, treatments
and therapies are also available to help manage symptoms.
“Our service works closely with the charity Parkinson’s UK. Together we provide support in the Bristol community through
regular meeting groups that offer information, friendship and support to local people with Parkinson’s, their families and carers.
We even organise some great activities to improve mobility, for example regular Tai Chi, group walks and Irish dancing classes.”
